PITTSBURGH — Before he heads to the NFL Hall of Fame, former Pittsburgh Steeler Jerome Bettis is making a big impact on the lives of thousands of teenagers in the city of Pittsburgh.
Bettis said it was a summer job program in Detroit that laid the foundation for the man he is today.
Now, the Jerome Bettis Foundation is partnering with Allegheny County and Pittsburgh to give 2,000 area youths the same opportunity for a bright, professional future.
"It’s incredible, because every teen should have the opportunity to work,” said Jhonaziya Brooks, who is one of hundreds of Pittsburgh children who benefitted from last year’s summer program.
Working as an office assistant allows Brooks to provide for her 3-year-old son and is helping her realize her dreams of one day becoming a nurse.
The Summer of Learn and Earn aims to give the same opportunities to low income children, preparing them to enter the force and make their dreams come true.
