Jim Sweeney, Pittsburgh native and former hometown lineman, has died

The Pitt Panthers announced on Sunday that former hometown lineman Jim Sweeney died Saturday at the age of 60.

Sweeney was a graduate of Seton LaSalle Catholic High School and went on to play four years with the Pitt Panthers. He spent much of his NFL career with the New York Jets, before finishing his last four seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Sweeney was a center for Dan Marino while at Pitt and earned All-American honors. The Jets drafted Sweeney in the second round in 1984, starting his 11-year stretch with the team. He played several positions, finishing up at the center.

Sweeney also spent time with the Seahawks before ending his career with the Steelers.

He played 228 games during his NFL career.

After retiring, Sweeney spent time coaching at Duquesne University, Peters Township, and South Fayette.

His last coaching job was as an offensive line coach with Albany.
