BOSTON — KeyBank is notifying some of its customers about a data breach after Social Security numbers, account information, names and addresses were stolen by hackers in early July.

The company said this affects those who have home mortgage loans through KeyBank after hackers broke into computers used by Overby-Seawell, a third-party company that serves KeyBank clients and handles tracking and insurance monitoring.

Channel 11 spoke with some people who use KeyBank’s services but don’t have a mortgage loan.

“Yeah, it’s pretty good, like I said, I’ve had issues sometimes where something didn’t go through, like a small hiccup with my account, but they usually fix it right away. They are usually good with customer service,” said James Grammer of Brighton Heights. “I was surprised when you told me they got hacked because I didn’t even know.”

Channel 11 reached out to KeyBank on Saturday. Representatives would not say exactly how many customers are affected, even after we asked them specifically about accounts in Pennsylvania. The company sent the following statement:

“We learned recently that a vendor that supports our home lending business, Overby-Seawell Company (”OSC”), suffered a cybersecurity incident that compromised data of its corporate clients, including personal information associated with KeyBank mortgage clients. This incident does not affect any Key systems or operations. OSC has reported this matter to law enforcement and we are working to make sure that enhanced measures are in place to protect our data. We take this matter very seriously and have notified all affected individuals.”

Grammer said even though he’s seemingly not impacted by the hack, it’s a good reminder to make sure all of his money is where it’s supposed to be.

“Check your balance frequently, and if you have an issue, call right away. Don’t let it sit, don’t let it fester,” Grammer said.

KeyBank is encouraging mortgage holders to sign up for free fraud monitoring to ensure their information is safe. You can find more tips on their website.
