SHALER TOWNSHIP, Pa. — First responders in Shaler Township hosted an event designed to get kids prepared to safely ride their bikes, just before summer arrives.
Saturday was the 16th annual “Bike Rodeo.”

Kids were fitted for free helmets and could test them out while riding through an obstacle course at Kiwanis Park.
Officers say it is a great environment to teach kids the rules of the road.
“It’s really important to get the kids out here. One, to show them safety if they’re riding on the road or in their own driveways, make sure that they wear their helmet, and that’s the biggest one. So if they do fall, that they have protection, but all in all, just to have fun,” said patrolman Joseph Spalick.
A local bike shop conducted inspections and bikes were raffled off for people who could make it.
Multiple organizations came together to bring the event to life, including the Shaler, Etna and Millvale Police Departments and Shaler Hampton EMS.
