Man injured in Downtown Pittsburgh road rage shooting

PITTSBURGH — Police are looking for the person who pulled the trigger after a man was shot in Downtown Pittsburgh Tuesday afternoon.

According to police, he was hit twice in the arm and taken to the hospital in stable condition.

The victim stopped his car near the corner of 4th Avenue and Smithfield Street just after 4 p.m. Police say the shooting likely happened about a block away on 3rd Avenue and Cherry Street but the whole ordeal began in the South Side as a road rage incident.

“The victim vehicle was driving erratically from the Smithfield Street Bridge into town,” Police Chief Larry Scirotto said. “His aggressive driving may have prompted this gunfire exchange.”

“I didn’t know what was going on until I seen the blood on his arm,” Derek Shelton told Channel 11. He works at Apparel House on Smithfield Street. “Dude came flying up. My car was parked across the street. He got out of the car and asked if anyone had anything to wrap it [the gunshot wounds]. I told him no.”

Channel 11 has reported extensively on other recent incidents during the daylight hours Downtown, including the assaults of a man in his 70s and a young woman walking to her bus stop.

These cases and others prompted an increase in what police call “high-visibility” patrols Downtown. The first week of those patrols wrapped up just two days ago.

“We have an obligation and responsibility to ensure we’re keeping this community safe,” Chief Scirotto said.

Channel 11 spoke to several people off-camera who told us they just don’t feel safe Downtown.

“It is a safe environment and these instances occur,” Scirotto responded. “I know they shake the core of people’s comfort. I don’t take that lightly.”

Police are still looking for the shooter and a silver Dodge Charger. If you have any information that can help, you are asked to call them.

The victim may also face charges for his role in the road rage incident that led to the shooting. A man was shot in Downtown Pittsburgh Tuesday afternoon.

Our crew at the scene saw homicide detectives on Smithfield Street between 4th and Forbes avenues. This was by the City County Building parking lot and the scene stretched several blocks.

Police told Channel 11 that a man was shot two times in the arm. He was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

No one is in custody at this point, police said.
