PITTSBURGH — A Homewood mom is behind bars after police say her two infant children and a puppy were living in horrendous conditions.
Police initially responded to a violent domestic call between Franshauna Batron and her eldest son. That was when police discovered the house was uninhabitable for children.
Police said the home was covered with urine-filled water bottles. A family member told police there was no running water for roughly two years and no heat. Mice and rat droppings covered the floors and were even found inside the refrigerator alongside rotten, moldy food.
Court paperwork says the two infants were in urine-soaked clothes and feces-filled diapers. Police say there was no crib, bassinet or pack ‘n play for them. They also couldn’t find any clean clothes or diapers.
Both children also had open sores due to lack of cleaning and care.
When Child and Youth Services of Allegheny County arrived at the scene, Batron exited the house holding one of the infants. When asked where the other one was, she said the child was sleeping and she didn’t want to wake her up.
Police said this led them to believe Batron intended on leaving the other child in the residence unattended.
Hospital staff at UPMC Children’s Hospital are evaluating the children.
