Local steelworkers hoping U.S. Steel’s deal with Nippon Steel goes through

Local steelworkers are holding out hope that the U.S. Steel sale with Nippon Steel goes through.

This week Cleveland Cliffs CEO Lourence Goncalves offered to buy the Steel giant. The offer comes after President Joe Biden blocked a deal between U.S. Steel and Nippon Steel, a decision that’s since been challenged in a lawsuit.

But, steelworkers Channel 11 spoke to are dismissing the offer from Cleveland Cliffs.

“I personally don’t feel Cleveland Cliffs has enough money to invest in the Mon Valley and the rest of United States Steel plans to keep us viable. The Japanese committed $2 billion,” said Glenn Thomas, who has been with US Steel for 26 years.

“Mr. Goncalves to me was very disrespectful to the Japanese people, in my opinion. I don’t know who he is to judge anybody,” said Duane Miller, a White Oak resident who has worked for U.S Steel for 24 years. “I thought it was very disrespectful to their country and their people. I was taken aback that a CEO of a company would even act like that.”

Andrew Macey who has been with US Steel for 44 years said he was also disappointed by the press conference.

“80 plus years they have been our ally. They have made a commitment to US Steel, to modernize our mills, protect our jobs, give us technology we don’t have,” Macey said. “I took offense to that interview.”

Matt Albensi, who has been with U.S. Steel for eight years said he isn’t paying attention to the Cleveland Cliff’s CEO.

“I don’t really pay too much attention to them. They are a competitor of ours. I know our steel-making capabilities are gonna be better. I think with this merger it puts them in jeopardy of maybe losing orders,” Albensi said.
