PENN HILLS, Pa. — A man is dead and a woman is in critical condition after an attempted murder-suicide in Penn Hills Tuesday night.
Allegheny County 911 was notified of a shooting in the 8000 block of Thon Drive around 9:30 p.m. First responders found a 41-year-old woman with multiple gunshot wounds, according to the Allegheny County Police Department. She was taken to an area hospital in critical condition.
A 50-year-old male was found with a gunshot wound to the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
On Sept. 5, the man was identified as Christopher Jones.
Homicide detectives determined the man was responsible for shooting the woman before shooting himself. Officials have not revealed the nature of their relationship.
Neighbors tell Channel 11 that on Tuesday night, the victim ran from home to home trying to get help, but before many on the street could even understand what was going on, they heard gunshots go off.
“My nephew called and said he heard shooting and someone screaming, and next thing you know, it was just filled with police,” said one neighbor. “We have been here 38 years, and this is just unbelievable.”
According to witnesses, the victim ran from home to home, trying to get help before someone finally opened their door, but by that point, police said the man began firing again and then turned the gun on himself.
“I prayed all night. I was praying; I don’t know what else to say,” the neighbor said.
Neighbors said that the shooter and victim lived next door to one another, and despite him being newer to the neighborhood, the two appeared to be friendly. They say they are shocked that the relationship soured and turned violent.
“Isolated but it was still murder, and it’s scary,” the neighbor said.
At this point, police are still looking into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. And they are asking anyone with information or surveillance footage to come forward by calling the County Police Tip Line at 1-833-ALL-TIPS.
