On Nov. 19, 2021 at approximately 3:20 p.m., Allegheny County Emergency Services 911 Division received a report from Sunijha Davis that her boyfriend, Kai Brown, had been stabbed by a white man, later identified as Damian Baverso.
McKeesport police were dispatched to the Midtown Plaza Apartments on 516 Sinclair Street in McKeesport. When they got there, police found that Kai Brown had been stabbed under his arm and was unresponsive. McKeesport Ambulance Rescue Services arrived on the scene and transported Kai Brown to UPMC McKeesport Hospital. Kai Brown succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital at 4:46 p.m.
The police then requested the assistance of the Allegheny County Homicide Investigations Unit. The Allegheny County Medical Examiner was also requested.
When investigators arrived, they interviewed Sunijha Davis. She stated that while she was staying at the Midtown Plaza Apartments, she received a text from Baverso, her ex-boyfriend. He threatened to kill her and her unborn child, and threatened to shoot Kai Brown.
Davis then went up to a different apartment with Brown and another person, Joshua Gilmore, to confront Baverso. Brown started arguing with Baverso about the threats.
Davis then said that Baverso pulled out a knife and stabbed Brown. She said that Gilmore got the knife away from Baverso. She said that she started punching and kicking Baverso, while Gilmore was holding him. Baverso was able to get away and fled from the apartment. She then called 911. Davis said that Baverso was a “runaway.”
After the interview with Davis, police reviewed audio and video recordings with Gilmore from his phone of the altercation between Brown and Baverso. The audio and video recording was collected as evidence.
Baverso faces one count of criminal homicide and two counts of terroristic threats.
