PITTSBURGH — Detectives are investigating a bizarre burglary at the IBEW Local 5 building on the South Side.

According to police, workers showed up at the office Tuesday morning and found broken glass everywhere.

Surveillance video showed a man take off his shirt, grab a garbage can and smash a window. The video shows the man leave about 15 minutes later with a sheet.

Officials said the man removed glass from his shoes and almost fell, but caught himself. Police said they believe he was drunk.

“I guess he was cold, so he draped a sheet around his body and walked away,” IBEW President Mike Varholla said.

Authorities said the man appears to be in his 20s.

IBEW officials said repairing the broken window will cost around $5,000.

The building is paid for by union dues, and the members don’t want that money to come out of their dues, so they’re offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction of the man.
