Police said that Hooks, who had a severe cut to his hand, stopped responding officers in the parking lot of the building.

It was later determined that Hooks stabbed the woman, who was found in a hallway, in the chest, police said. The woman’s name has not been released.

“She was coming at me with a knife. I was just defending myself,” Hooks said as he was escorted out of the New Brighton Area Police Department Sunday morning.

Ray Bryant lives down the street and said what happened here concerns him.

“I was shocked,” he said. “It was a total surprise. Any time you hear something like that it takes you off guard.”

Hooks is being held in the Beaver County Jail.
