WASHINGTON, Pa. — A driver has died after a horse racing accident at Hollywood Casino at The Meadows on Wednesday afternoon.
At least six horses were involved in the crash during the 11th race. Officials said it appeared another horse broke its stride, causing the chain reaction.
Hunter Myers, 27, was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital in critical condition. He later died.
The Hollywood Casino at the Meadows sent Channel 11 the following statement on Thursday:
“Hollywood Casino at The Meadows and the Meadows Standardbred Owners Association would like to pass along our most sincere condolences and heartfelt prayers to the family and friends of Hunter Myers, who passed away early this morning after a tragic racing accident at The Meadows yesterday afternoon. Our thoughts and sympathy are with his fiancée, Chloe Fisher, and son, Hayden Myers during this time.
“Hunter was a rising star in our industry. The Meadows racing community, and the entire harness racing industry, are deeply saddened by this tragic event.”
The Meadows Standardbred Owners Association said on Facebook that racing has been canceled for the remainder of the week.
A Facebook video posted in February by the Meadows Standardbred Owners Association said that Myers has raced nearly 20,000 times and has been harness racing since he was 16.
A GoFundMe has been up for Hunter’s family. Click here if you’d like to donate.
