Teen dies after being shot in Monessen; victim identified

MONESSEN, Pa. — A Monessen High School student who was shot Tuesday night and flown by medical helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital has died.

According to Westmoreland County 911, police and EMS units were called to the 600 block of South 14th Street for reports of a shooting at 8:14 p.m.

Monessen police told Channel 11 a 16-year-old male was shot in the upper abdomen. Police later confirmed that he died as a result of his injuries.

The Westmoreland County Coroner has identified the 16-year-old as Amari Altomore.

Monessen Superintendent Robert Motte posted a letter to the community on the school’s website Wednesday. He urged families to talk to their children about the unexpected death.

Motte said the district will offer counseling and support services to students and staff.

The teenager is believed to have been a member of the school’s football team.

No other injuries were reported.

According to officials, a search warrant was issued for the house where the shooting may have happened on South 14th Street and Reservoir Avenue.

Police said the victim may have walked out of that house.

There’s no word on what was found during that search.
