WILKINS TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Shots fired at a busy Sheetz in Wilkins Township just before 11 p.m. on Thursday.
“It’s just really sad. You don’t want to hear about something like that happening,” said Emily Nordquist.
Allegheny County Police said a 37-year-old man was driving 55-year-old John Angel in a Lyft when the two started fighting.
Police said the driver pulled over into this Sheetz parking lot where the fight became physical and the driver shot and killed Angel.
“When someone says murder and Lyft, I would think it’s the passenger hurting the driver because that’s (in) the news stories recently,” Nordquist said.
It’s the third incident in recent weeks involving ride-share drivers following the attempted carjackings in the city.
Rachel Black is concerned for anyone using ride-share and wonders if it’s really safe.
“I stress to them time and time again, try port authority because riding with strangers, you don’t know them, you don’t know what they are carrying or what they are capable of. It’s dangerous,” Black said.
County police are still trying to figure out what led up to shots being fired, but the Lyft driver did stay on the scene and is cooperating. So far, no charges have been filed.
“I just don’t understand the meaning of just so much violence over, and I don’t know what happened, but I’m in shock,” Black said.
Sheetz told Channel 11 it is cooperating with the investigation and provided surveillance video to police.
“We are deeply saddened to hear about this incident. Safety is fundamental to Lyft, and our hearts go out to the loved ones affected. We have suspended the driver from the Lyft community, been in contact with the rider’s family to offer our support and stand ready to assist law enforcement with their investigation,” a Lyft spokesperson told Channel 11.
