"I know he's smiling down on us right now. He knows we're there for him, that we'll always be there for him, and I know he's excited that he gets to see everybody doing well in their life before he's gone and after he's gone," said Nekeena Freeman, Maurice Freeman's sister.
Police said Freeman was shot by Kendrick after a basketball game.
On Monday, the judge said Freeman's death was "senseless" and "irrational," and that Kendrick was being territorial for no good reason.
Kendrick's sentence was handed down with no opportunity for parole. He has 10 days to file an appeal.
