Police said Vearnon came out of the Chester Avenue home with a gun when the three men tried to break in about 1:30 a.m. Gunfire was exchanged, and Vearnon was struck.
Vearnon was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
"He was kind-hearted and he'd do just about anything for anybody. He had a lot of respect for his elders," said Anthony Vearnon, Matthew's uncle.
Three cars were also hit during the shooting, according to police.
"Police were all over the place. They called me out and told me there was some damage with my car. I was just astounded when I saw it," said Mary Fearbry, neighbor.
Homicide detectives are investigating.
