Man struck by vehicle on South Side as officers called to shots fired

PITTSBURGH — Police are investigating after a man was run over by a vehicle on the South Side early Monday. The incident occurred as officers were responding to a report of shots fired in the area of 12th and Carson streets around 2:15 a.m.

The driver of the vehicle fled the scene, but hit a parked car near 10th and Carson streets, according to a report from Pittsburgh Public Safety.

EMS transported the victim to a local hospital in critical condition.

The vehicle that fled was later recovered by police. One person was taken in for questioning.

A Channel 11 photographer captured video of police activity outside Jack’s Bar, including officers placing evidence markers on the ground. A car mirror could be seen on the ground and a trash can was knocked over.

Not long before the hit and run, there was also a large fight near 16th and East Carson with several men and women.

“It was a lot, chaotic,” Jersey Mitchell tells Channel 11.

“Someone got beat up down there — outside of Jimmy D’s,” Mitchell added. “Stomped on and stuff — really bad. Crazy.”

DeShonne Daniel-McCollum was arrested and charged with two counts of felony aggravated assault among other charges. Police say he was violent with them, and they had to use a taser on him. He was also charged with threatening a cop when he gets out of jail and is back on the South Side.

“Hopefully, we can do something to clean it up down here, because it’s not too great,” Kalli Osbourne added.

At last check, the hit-and-run victim was still in critical condition. It’s not clear if the man was walking on the sidewalk or crossing the street.
