Man who led police on chase that injured 5 will go to trial on charges

PITTSBURGH — The man who led police on a high speed chase through several Pittsburgh neighborhoods in November will stand trial on charges including aggravated assault.

Donovan Robinson was allegedly behind the wheel during the chase that ended with five people being sent to the hospital with injuries. One of those injured was Robinson’s 12-year-old sister, who has since recovered.

On Tuesday a judge heard Pittsburgh police testify that Robinson sped off when they tried to pull him over for a traffic violation. That action spurred a pursuit that went through Larimer, East Liberty and Shadyside before ending.

The chase, which ended after a crash on Baum Boulevard, prompted police to change their policy and to limit chases only to incidents involving suspects believed to be involved in a violent felony.

Channel 11 talked to Robinson’s mother outside of court on Tuesday, who said she raised her son to act better than this.

“That’s the last thing I thought, that he would put anyone in danger, especially his siblings or someone else in the public,” said Carolyn Robinson.

Robinson knows her son will pay the price for his actions.

“I won’t deny that he made very poor choices,” she said.

Attorney James Wymard told Channel 11 his client is not a dangerous man.

“He is a good guy,” he said. “Not a bad guy. He’s not a violent guy and I just think he was in full panic.”

Robinson faces a list of charges three pages long in connection with the incident. It’s not clear when his next court date will be.
