Man with autism attacked, beaten while walking to work in Butler; 2 suspects in custody

BUTLER, Pa. — A man with autism was attacked and beaten while walking to work in Downtown Butler, according to police.

The attack happened along West Jefferson Street on Thursday around 8:30 p.m.

“It’s pretty darn scary who picks on disabled people,” said Robert Ackelson.

Butler City Police said they arrested Zhamare Wyche and Brandon Caruso in the attack. Police said they punched the victim and continuously kicked him in the face and ribs.

“I’m disabled as well, that would be sad. I would say it’s very troubling,” said Tressa Gilley.

Minutes later, police said the same men then assaulted another victim a few blocks away along West Cunningham Street.

Some people said that’s awful and avoid walking around at night.

“I would never be out in Butler at 8 p.m. at night except in the height of summer,” said Ackelson.

The second victim told police he was walking home from the 7-11 nearby when one of the men punched him in the face, threw him down and tried to steal his wallet and then ran off.

After gathering surveillance video and speaking to witnesses,  police said they were able to identify both men who admitted to being involved in the attacks.

The man with autism told police he works as a janitor through a social program for adults with disabilities. He has to walk to his job by himself at night and told police he was in fear for his life. Both suspects face felony charges.
