MCCANDLESS, Pa. — A woman was out for a walk with her dog like usual on Tuesday night, then tragedy struck.
A memorial now marks the spot in McCandless where a car hit and killed Lara Kay Tebelius, 55, and her dog Piper.

A friend of the victim tells Channel 11 Piper was her world, and had been taking private dog training classes for years.
Neighbors tell Channel 11 they have complaints about this intersection.
“You gotta really pay attention pulling out here. It’s only stopping this way, so when you’re turning out you gotta really watch, you have to take your time and you have to pull out slowly,” neighbor Laura Thompson said.
In 2022 and 2023, there were only two crashes total at this intersection. But neighbors who live in this area says they still want it changed to be made safer.
An Allegheny County public works spokesperson told Channel 11 the county owns Highland Road and McCandless owns Harmony Drive.
Adding sidewalks, street lights or a traffic signal would fall on the township. And, county patrols could handle speeding concerns, or make the intersection a four way stop.
County officials say they plan to research the crashes that happened at the intersection over the last five years and look into the cause of those crashes, and come up with a plan from there.
