Meet Pluto: Allegheny County Emergency Services introduces new accelerant detection K-9

ALLEGHENY COUNTY, Pa. — Allegheny County Emergency Services announced the graduation of their newest accelerant detection K-9, Pluto.

Pluto joined the department in November following the retirement of K-9 Bailey.

Pluto will serve as part of the Allegheny County Fire Marshal’s office.

“The Allegheny County Fire Marshal’s office has a long history with the ATF (the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives) and the Accelerant K-9 and Handler certification. The skills and expertise that these teams work daily to maintain and provide throughout their career are critical to many of our fire investigations,” said Chief Matt Brown. “We are excited (for) the addition of Pluto to our staff and thankful to Bailey for his years of professional service. We are equally proud and thankful to Deputy Fire Marshal Michele Gregory, who has now served as handler to two ACFM K-9.”

Pluto’s predecessor, Bailey, assisted with the investigation of over 600 fires during his career.

Pluto is a 17-month-old yellow English Labrador retriever. He was raised in the Puppies Behind Bars program and was selected by the ATF for accelerant detection.
