MOUNT LEBANON, Pa. — UPDATE 3/10/24

The Mount Lebanon Police Department announced on Facebook that the driver of the vehicle stepped forward and “did the right thing.”

Mount Lebanon police have released pictures of a vehicle they say hit a child who was trying to cross Kelso Road where it intersects with Pembroke Drive.

Police say it was Monday afternoon around 3:45 when the child tried to cross Kelso Road at the designated crosswalk. Since Mount Lebanon is a walking district, the little boy was coming home from school when he was hit according to neighbors. Authorities say the driver of the silver or gray SUV, which is believed to be a Lexus, is an older woman with grey hair. Police say after she hit the boy, she didn’t stop and was last seen traveling towards Bower Hill Road. Neighbors say the road is constantly congested with drivers.

“It’s a high-traffic area and there’s no sidewalks on there and I don’t think they have the easements to put the sidewalks in so it’s difficult. I know I’m hesitant to walk my dogs down there because of the traffic pattern,” Paul LaQuatra said.

Police say the young boy did need medical treatment, but didn’t provide details on his injuries. Neighbors say the boy’s father told them he is going to be OK.

One neighbor who lives right in front of where the hit and run took place says, she immediately got in touch with officials to try and make sure this can’t happen again.

The Kelso Road Neighbor said, “I did write our commissioner and he responded with a very positive proactive message saying that they’re going to put up a speed sign. They’re going to track the traffic, the speed they’re going. They’re also going to have a police car parked here.”

Mount Lebanon police are asking anyone who recognizes the SUV to call Allegheny County Dispatch and ask to speak to a Mount Lebanon Police Officer.
