Mt. Lebanon school board holds moment of silence for alumna killed in Mercer County crash

ALLEGHENY COUNTY, Pa. — On Monday, the Mt. Lebanon school board held a moment of silence for 19-year-old Danielle Duncan.

The 2022 alumna was killed, and another teenager was seriously injured in a car accident on Interstate 79 in Mercer County.

According to Pennsylvania State Police, the crash happened on I-79 north near mile marker 129 in New Vernon Township at around 8:04 p.m. Friday.

Matteo Guarjardo, 18, was driving south on I-79 when he lost control of his car, which went off the east side of the roadway and hit an embankment.

Police said the car went up and over the embankment and rolled over before stopping in the left lane of northbound lane of I-79.

According to police, the car’s lights stopped working and it was blocking the left lane.

Another car hit the passenger side and both vehicles went off the east side of I-79 north.

Duncan, from Pittsburgh, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Guarjardo was taken to an area hospital for a suspected serious injury. Police said he wasn’t wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

The second driver wasn’t injured.

The investigation is ongoing.

The Mt. Lebanon school district plans to make grief counselors available to students.
