Multiple North Charleroi leaders abruptly resign with no explanation

NORTH CHARLEROI BOROUGH, Pa. — North Charleroi’s local government is in turmoil after the mayor, council president, another council member and the town’s solicitor all resigned without reason.

11 News found the borough building locked Wednesday with a sign on the door giving the community a phone number to call with any borough related issues.

The phone number wouldn’t connect when we tried calling it.

Mayor Steve Hega agreed to speak off camera. He told 11 News he was advised not to speak out to anyone about the reasons they turned in their resignation letters.

Vice present of council‚ Fred Schwalb, who is not resigning told Channel 11 an inappropriate letter was sent to the solicitor, which played a role in the resignations.

The letter was allegedly so graphic and inappropriate, no one would speak to it. Schwalb said it was full of personal attacks on the specific people who resigned.

The borough council president Carrie Zeletski hung up when we tried reaching out for comment.

All resignations take effect on Jan. 31.

It’s not clear if anyone is in charge for the last two weeks of their time as borough leaders.

The mayor did tell me post-pandemic politics have been increasingly difficult, and it had been difficult agreeing on community matters for many recent votes.
