A one-way bus pass is $2.75.

So, it can be expensive if you rely on public transportation.

Having a free or discounted pass is making a difference for many low-income families who benefit from the SNAP program. A program that started in November provides free Pittsburgh Regional Transit bus passes, discounted passes and Connect Cards loaded with funds to Allegheny County residents who qualify.

Since November, about 14,500 people are participating. Of that number, 9,500 are adults and 5,000 are children.

About 45% of applicants said they were paying cash to ride PRT, while 36% were paying more than $25 a week on transit, according to a survey people who applied conducted by the county. About 36% of applicants are paying over $25 a week on transit.

The program is scheduled to continue for six more months.
