New evidence unveiled in court after 2021 murder of U-Haul clerk

PITTSBURGH — Exclusive new details about one of the most shocking crimes we’ve reported on were revealed in court on Tuesday.

>> Man charged in shooting of Pittsburgh U-Haul employee, police chase on Route 28

A U-Haul clerk was executed in the middle of the day, ensuing a high-speed police chase on Route 28. Investigators say everything started because the suspect, Braijon Burton, wanted to rent a truck but couldn’t afford to pay for it.

Channel 11′s Gabriella DeLuca was the only TV reporter in court as the new evidence was unveiled.

Jake Jaillet, 21, was killed in the shooting. He wasn’t even supposed to be at work the day he was shot and killed at his summer job.

Jaillet’s best friend testified they were both working at the store for the summer. The friend said he heard two gunshots and ran out of the business. He found Jaillet lying in the parking lot.

The friend then made a heartbreaking phone call to 911 as he applied pressure to Jaillet’s neck, asking dispatchers to send an ambulance.

Burton’s attorneys aren’t denying that he killed Jaillet, but are trying to avoid a first-degree murder conviction.

The trial is expected to last a week.
