BUFFALO TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A man died after being hit by a car in Buffalo Township Wednesday.
Crews were called to the 700 block of Ekastown Road at around 8:15 a.m. for a vehicle that hit a pedestrian.
The victim has been identified as Dave Roenigk, 62.
Andy Roenigk is in disbelief after what Buffalo Township police say happened to his brother.
“What do you say? You know, this is someone that’s been your best friend forever,” Andy Roenigk said.
A driver, who hasn’t been identified, reportedly fell asleep at the wheel before hitting the 62-year-old Butler County native who was mowing the grass and doing weed whacking around 8 a.m.
“It’s not supposed to be that way. You’re not supposed to be on the side of the road and then not here the next day, you know,” Andy Roenigk said.
Dave was a part of the Roenigk family which owns a fleet of school buses throughout the region. When school is out, Andy says his brother Dave would maintain family properties. During the school year, Dave would drive the school busses
“Honestly, I think people just loved him. But the idea that this guy owns this company and he’s out driving away, just doing out like the rest,” Andy Roenigk said.
It’s a “lead by example” legacy that Andy says Dave instilled in his two sons Matt and Joey.
Andy says the reality of the tragedy is just beginning to unfold. He says it’s a reminder to make the most of every day.
“Don’t forget to hug the ones you love, really because you just don’t know, because one day you’re just not there anymore,” he said.
Ekastown Road was shut down for over four hours while the State Police accident reconstruction unit helped Buffalo Township with its investigation. Police say they’re waiting for those results to determine if any charges will be filed against the driver.
