PITTSBURGH — A man visiting a Pittsburgh nursing home on Wednesday afternoon to see a family member was shot and robbed while outside the facility.
An Allegheny County 911 dispatch official told Channel 11 that first responders were called to Frankstown Avenue near the Corner View Nursing and Rehabilitation Center at 12:41 p.m.
Pittsburgh police say a 70-year-old man found outside the lobby of the nursing home was shot through the stomach. He told first responders that he was robbed of cash and his wedding band by an unknown man.
“He had parked his vehicle in the parking lot of the nursing home and walked into the lobby of the building and sat down. Police were called and firefighters even gave first aid to the victim,” said Cara Cruz, a Pittsburgh police spokesperson.
The victim was taken to a hospital and was last known to be in critical condition.
Police tell us the man had come to the nursing home to visit his brother.
Police say they found a crime scene in the nursing home’s parking lot, but only have a vague description of the suspect: a tall, thin man last seen wearing a gray hoodie. He ran from the scene.
The nursing home’s administrator says the facility was placed on lockdown immediately after the injured man entered the lobby. The lockdown has since been lifted and all residents and staff are safe.
Pittsburgh police’s violent crime unit is investigating. Cruz says it’s too soon to tell if this was a random attack.
“The investigation is in its early stages. The crime scene unit was out here and located a bit of a crime scene by the victim’s vehicle which is being towed from the scene,” she said.
