JEFFERSON HILLS, Pa. — University of Pittsburgh star wide receiver Tyler Boyd was stopped by police on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol early Friday morning, according to police.

Boyd, 20, was pulled over about 2:30 a.m. on Route 885 in Jefferson Hills after he was seen passing another vehicle within the intersection of Wray Large Road, police said. An officer noticed the smell of alcohol on Boyd, a junior at Pitt who could be headed to the National Football League after this season.

Police said Boyd admitted to having consumed two shots of an alcoholic beverage a short time before his vehicle was pulled over. The results of a portable breath test were positive for alcohol.

Boyd was then taken to Jefferson Hospital, where he submitted to a blood draw that will undergo a blood-alcohol content analysis. He was later released to a family member.

Charges will be filed by summons, police said. Those charges are expected to be driving under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance, along with summary offenses including underage drinking and vehicle code violations.

Pitt football coach Pat Narduzzi issued a statement Saturday night and said the situation is both "serious and disappointing."

"We have high expectations for the young men in our program, on and off the field," the statement said. "Tyler understands that and knows he must be responsible for his actions. Certainly, he will be held accountable to our internal standards of discipline and behavior."

Boyd, who is from Clairton and went to high school there, has been ranked as one of the best wide receivers in college football going into the upcoming season.
