PITTSBURGH — The processing facility for Pittsburgh popcorn was ordered to close after a reinspection.

The Josephine Street facility was first issued a consumer alert on Dec. 4 after inspectors with the Allegheny County Health Department found more than a dozen violations, including food products gnawed on by rodents and rodent droppings throughout the building.

The facility was shut down on Dec. 13 after a reinspection found five violations, including two high-risk violations involving rodents.

In their report, inspectors say they found seven seasoned 50-pound bags of seasoned cheddar cheese gnawed by rodents. Some of the bags had droppings inside.

Inspectors also noted finding a live mouse behind a walk-in cooler, a dead mouse on a glue board and droppings in several places.

The report does note that the facility is under a new contract with a pest control company and significant progress had been made from the first inspection, but adulterated food was still present.
