PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Public Schools board approved a resolution it said will protect its students from “harmful legislation.”
The vote opposes legislation being considered in the Pennsylvania state House of Representatives and state Senate. The district said this legislation would limit educators’ ability to embrace differences, and allow students and teachers to be themselves.
The legislation being considered would ban Critical Race Theory in schools and prohibit classroom instruction on gender identity and sexual orientation.
“They deserve to accurately learn about our history, read books that represent their heritage and culture, and discover who they are and how they identify,” a board member said.
The board said the passing of this legislation would impact the district’s ability to implement policies, including prohibiting bullying and harassment and nondiscrimination.
