PITTSBURGH — A well-known Pittsburgh sportscaster has apologized for an insensitive comment made during Saturday night’s Penguins game.

Stan Savran alluded to the New York City case of Eric Garner saying, “I thought, Jay, the Penguins would have to put on those, ‘I can’t breathe’ T-shirts because Columbus was suffocating.”

Garner was killed in July after a police officer put him in a stranglehold. A recent grand jury decision not to indict the officer involved has resulted in protests around the country.

Savran later apologized for the comment both on-air and online. He called his comment “mindless, totally unacceptable and just plain stupid.”
