PITTSBURGH — PNC has filed another 19 regulatory applications to shutter branches across seven states.
Pittsburgh is spared as the cuts are largely branches within supermarkets Giant Foods and Stop & Shop in the MidAtlantic region. Four branches — one each in Illinois and Ohio and two in Michigan — are also on the chopping block, according to PNC’s new filing with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency.
That brings the disclosed locations PNC is cutting in 2023 to 96.
Banks pruning branches within retailers has been a growing national trend over the past five years. Citizens has closed 27 branches within Giant Eagle supermarkets in the Pittsburgh area since October with one more to go in March.
PNC confirmed to the Business Times last July that it would close 135 in-store branches in waves during 2023, chiefly in New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland and Delaware. These are the states most impacted by the latest round of cuts. Some 127 will be inside Giant Foods and Stop & Shop stores. Another eight will close within ShopRite grocery stores in certain areas of Pennsylvania: None of these are in the Pittsburgh region.
PNC said it recognizes that branches continue to play an important role for many customers when it comes to conducting certain transactions and holding important in-person financial conversations with its banking experts.
