CONNELLSVILLE, Pa. — Some brave local swimmers started the new year in the cold.

A “Polar Bear Jump” was held in Connellsville on Wednesday.

The tradition involves a dip in the Yough River every New Year.

Attendees were encouraged to bring canned and boxed food for the Connellsville Community Ministries food bank.

“I’m gonna freeze but it’s all good. It’s for a good cause,” said Rebecca Sleepy of Pittsburgh.

Swimmers were able to get hot chocolate and warm up at a bonfire after taking the plunge.
