OAKMONT, Pa. — On Tuesday, dive crews were at the scene of a car found in the Allegheny River.
Dispatch confirmed to Channel 11 that the report of a car in the river at the Oakmont Yacht Club came in at 3:02 p.m.
According to the Oakmont Borough Police Chief Michael Ford, they began investigating after a teenager, kayaking with his stepfather, spotted something unusual in the water.
“I’m glad I found it. It was weird, different than what I expected,” said 13-year-old Ian Simmers. “I was sure that it came off the launch… and it floated down.”
The car, thought to be an ‘80s Pontiac Firebird, was pulled from the water after crews and a tow truck worked all evening.
“It’s a steep 50-foot bank going straight to the river,” said Ford. “It appears no signs of life, no bodies, no nothing, no foul play, it’s been in there probably for decades.”
Simmers told police he thought he saw a second car in the water, but police said there was nothing in that area but debris.
Police are now investigating how the car got into the water and whom it belonged to.
