Police: Young girl escapes attempted kidnapping in Bedford Dwellings, search for suspect ongoing

PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh police are investigating after an attempted kidnapping in Bedford Dwellings on Wednesday.

“I am very concerned about it especially for my kids,” said Idiatou Diallo, a local mother.

Diallo has a 5-year-old daughter and a 6-year-old son. She lives on Reunion Place, which is where police say a man approached a young girl Wednesday afternoon while she was walking home.

“I believe she was 10 or 11 years old,” said Pittsburgh Police Public Information Officer Amanda Mueller.

Pittsburgh police say when the man tried to grab her arm, she stabbed him with her pen and was able to get away. Then, the suspect drove off.

“At least she can defend herself,” said Diallo. “I think it’s a wonderful thing what she did to defend herself and run away.”

Pittsburgh police say they’ll be in the area keeping a closer watch as a precaution.

“Zone will be doing extra patrols, and we’ll be looking into that but we’re still investigating,” said Pittsburgh Police Commander Richard Ford. “At this time, there are no arrests.”

Pittsburgh police have not released a description of the man or the vehicle yet.
