Upper Saint Clair Police were called to the 100 block of Lamar Road at around 2:55 p.m. on Sunday after they were told about a domestic situation involving a 48-year-old man. Police later identified that man as Christopher Lee Shepherd.
One of his family members spoke with a member of Allegheny County Mental Health and it was decided that an involuntary commitment order would be issued for him.
Court documents say that when Upper Saint Clair police went to take Shepherd into custody he locked all of the doors and barricaded himself in. When officers tried to breach a window that was covered with plywood, Shepherd stuck a knife out of it and tried to cut them, police said in an affidavit.
Officers backed away from the house after this and formed a perimeter. They called the South Hills Area Council of Government’s Crisis Intervention and Response Team for help. Court documents say SHACOG units were also called in for backup at this time.
Allegheny County Police said Shepherd came out of the house with a knife at 8:39 p.m. and approached the crisis intervention and response team officers. Police say he was given multiple commands to stop but continued to approach the team. He was shot multiple times by police and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Allegheny County Police confirm four officers fired their weapons: one from the Baldwin Police Department, one from the Brentwood Police Department and two from the Bethel Park Police Department.
The Municipality of Bethel Park says those two officers are on paid administrative leave per police while an investigation occurs.
Allegheny County Police are still looking for information on this incident and ask anyone with details to contact them at 1-833-ALL-TIPS. Callers can remain anonymous.
