The shooting happened on the 200 block of Arlington Avenue at around 3:30 a.m. Friday after officers were called to a domestic dispute.

Investigators said officers from the North Versailles Police Department encountered a man in an alley behind a house and attempted to take him into custody. Police said the suspect refused initial commands and one of the officers deployed his taser. According to police, the man then pulled out a handgun and started firing multiple shots at officers.

One of those officers was shot and taken to a hospital. He was listed in stable condition and later released.

Investigators said officers returned fire and the suspect then fled the scene.

Allegheny County police were requested and were able to identify the suspect as 46-year-old Ian Lamont Fields.

While processing the scene, a county police detective located Fields in the 200 block of Washington Road and he was taken into custody around 8:30 a.m.

Police said Fields was shot once in his lower right leg during the exchange of gunfire with officers. He was taken to a hospital for treatment and will then be taken to the Allegheny County Jail.

“It’s the first time for us but as a law enforcement family, it’s something that’s more and more common. And every time it’s just as shocking as the previous,” said North Versailles Assistant Police Chief Norman Locke.

Fields is facing multiple charges, including aggravated assault and assault of a law enforcement officer.

Locke told us if anyone wants to bring something to the police department to share their well wishes with the officer, you can contact them beforehand, make sure someone’s there and drop it off.
