Port Authority testing mobile app that allows riders to pay using their smartphones

PITTSBURGH — If you use city buses, you may be seeing some added technology.

Port Authority is testing a mobile app that allowed riders to pay using their smartphones.

The way it works is simple -- You’ll pay your bus fare on the Mobile Fare app, then you’ll scan your cellphone once you’ll get on the bus and then you’re done.

The Port Authority is having a company install the new hardware on 50 buses serving seven routes this week.

They’re doing this as a test before they commit to putting the new hardware on all of the buses.

Once it’s released, you’ll be able to use the app, cash or a ConnectCard.
