MCCANDLESS, Pa. — Local leaders voted to make safety upgrades to an intersection in McCandless where a woman and her dog were hit and killed last month.

On Dec. 17, Lara Tebelius was walking her dog Piper near the intersection of Highland Road and Harmony Drive when a car crashed into them, and they both died. Lara’s father, Charles Tebelius said he was shocked when he heard the news.

Charles said Lara was kind, generous, smart, and hardworking. Her dog was her world and she routinely walked piper near the intersection where neighbors have safety concerns. They are pushing for change. Charles said it’s needed.

“I’ve been here since the 18th of December the day after she died. I’ve driven that intersection many times. There is still a creepy feeling of not being able see cars properly so good this is happening. It will prevent someone else from getting killed,” said Charles Tebelius.

Allegheny County and McCandless leaders said they are working together to make it happen.

On Monday night, the town of McCandless took action. Council unanimously approved an ordinance to allow Allegheny County to make it a four-way stop.

“It’s better late than never. It should have been done before. It should have been done years ago. It’s kind of a guessing game at times when you pull out of that intersection,” said Charles Tebelius.

McCandless also voted to add more stop signs at another intersection nearby. Right now, police are investigating the crash. The drive stayed on scene. No charges have been filed at this time.
