According to a social media post from the plant, neighbors may see this glow over the next couple of nights as hydrocarbons are reintroduced into the system.

The plant said the ground flare is an important environmental control and safety device used in other processing plants.

The flares are a safe way to burn hydrocarbon gases as an alternative to releasing the gases directly into the atmosphere, according to Shell.

Shell said it protects the community and employees from exposure to the gases.
