PITTSBURGH — A Hollman’s two-toed sloth celebrated its birthday after undergoing dental treatment.
Carob the sloth, 36, of the Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium, went on a medical journey after his keepers saw swelling in his jaw. He had a history of dental problems so staff quickly took him to a veterinary dentist from VCA Great Lakes Veterinary Specialists.
He went through advanced diagnostic imaging and the team discovered he had a fragmented retained tooth root. A dentist removed it and the sloth recovered.
In celebration of his recovery, his keepers decorated his winter holding area with birthday decorations.
Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium officials said he slept through his birthday but came out at night to party.
He is currently away from his viewing area but will return when the weather is warm again.
