Steel Valley school board votes to investigate boys basketball coach

PITTSBURGH — The Steel Valley school board plans to investigate unspecified allegations against the high school boys' basketball coach, according to Channel 11's news exchange partners at TribLIVE.

School directors voted 7-2 Thursday to initiate an investigation into Drew Schifino.

Several directors told TribLIVE the allegations do not involve inappropriate relations with students or players, but they did not provide any other details.

Schifino denied any wrongdoing and called the move a personal attack.

"If I had done anything I'd be fired," he told TribLIVE.

He was not suspended.

Schifino is the sixth-leading scorer in WPIAL history. He was hired by Steel Valley in 2014 and replaced longtime boys basketball coach Shawn McCallister, who remains the athletic director.

Back in February, Schifino refused to coach the WPIAL Class AA playoff game against South Fayette in protest of leading scorer Dom Keyes being deemed ineligible by the school's administration only a few hours before tipoff.

Schifino told TribLIVE McCallister accused him of not inviting his son to open gym pickup games and workouts during the summer.

Basketball season starts in about three weeks.
