The injured officer, a Tarentum police patrolman, has been released from the hospital according to the police department.

The incident prompted a heavy police presence as investigators searched for the suspect, 28-year-old Aaron Lamont Swan, Jr.

Swan was shot and killed by police after a chase and an exchange of gunfire in the city of Pittsburgh.

Here is what else we know so far:

Shooting incident

Allegheny County police said the first encounter with Swan began Sunday night when Pennsylvania State Police conducted a traffic stop for violation of probation involving weapons. Police said he fled from the officers.

Monday morning, Harrison Township police engaged in a pursuit with Swan, and he fled on foot.

At around 2 p.m. on Monday, officers encountered Swan near the border of Brackenridge and Tarentum in a foot pursuit.

The chase lasted for several hours through different neighborhoods before two separate shootings, one in the 800 block of Third Street and another on Brackenridge Avenue.

Officers were hit in both shootings. The Brackenridge police chief, Justin McIntire, was shot and killed. Investigators believe he was ambushed.

A Tarentum officer was shot in the leg and is listed in stable condition. He was released from the hospital Monday afternoon and is recovering at home with his family.

Allegheny County police said after shooting McIntire and the Tarentum officer, Swan walked into an area home and demanded the resident’s car keys, taking a vehicle and fleeing the area. The resident was not injured.

Swan was later spotted in Pittsburgh’s Lincoln-Lemington neighborhood. Police attempted to stop the vehicle, but he fled again. He crashed the vehicle on Columbiana Street in the Homewood-Brushton neighborhood and fled on foot into a wooded area, according to police.

While officers formed a perimeter, Swan ran into a housing development. Police said he fired at officers, who returned fire, striking Swan. Swan was declared dead at the scene.

A Pittsburgh officer sustained a minor injury from what is believed to be shrapnel during the incident.

Allegheny County police said a total of five guns believed to have been used by Swan were recovered – four in Brackenridge and one in Homewood-Brushton.

Allegheny County police said they will also investigate the officer-involved shooting and will turn over their findings to the District Attorney’s office when complete.
