T service resumes between Washington Junction, South Hills Village following utility pole fire

UPDATE: West Penn Power has made a temporary repair that allows Pittsburgh Regional Transit’s T service to resume.

T service was suspended between Washington Junction and South Hills for several hours because there was a fire above the lines that power PRT rail cars.

PRT says the temporary repair will allow PRT rail service to resume by 7 p.m. There may be some residual delays until service catches up to regular schedules.

Pittsburgh Regional Transit says the T service is suspended between Washington Junction and South Hills due to a West Penn Power utility pole that caught fire in Bethel Park.

PRT officials say the fire started at 2:10 p.m. The fire did not damage any PRT property, but was located above the lines that power PRT rail cars.

This closure impacts at least 16 stops on both lines. You can view a full map here.

Three PRT shuttle buses will take riders from Washington Junction to South Hills Village via a route on Library Road, Bethel Church Road, and Fort Couch Road. Traffic and potential traffic signal outages may force the buses to take other roads.

PRT says the rail cars that are in service will continue to operate between Washington Junction and the North Side. There are fewer rail cars operating than usual during rush hour because the outage is blocking any additional rail vehicles from leaving the rail facility in Upper St. Clair.

The Silver Line is running normally, but with delays.

At one point, according to West Penn Power, there were nearly 1,500 people without power in Bethel Park and Upper St. Clair.

There is no current estimated time when West Penn Power will complete repairs.
