Teen already behind bars for homicide accused of setting up deadly Duquesne shooting from jail cell

DUQUESNE, Pa. — A teen, who was already behind bars for homicide, is accused of helping orchestrate a deadly shooting in Duquesne from his jail cell.

Detectives found out that the victim in the Duquesne shooting was scheduled to testify against Daemond Artemus, 17, who is accused of shooting and killing a man in McKeesport in the fall.

Allegheny County police said that Artemus, who was in jail, conspired with John Perry, 18, to break into the witness’ Duquesne home in October and shoot him.

According to a criminal complaint, a man who was shot inside the home told police he was set to testify against Artemus that same day and that Perry, whom the victim knows, was inside his house just hours before the shooting.

The victim’s girlfriend, Niejah Hill, 23, was shot and killed.

According to court documents, investigators analyzed phone data and determined that Perry and Artemus, who was in jail at the time, had spoken over the phone multiple times before and after the Duquesne shooting, with Artemus allegedly telling Perry that he believed the victim was an informant to the police.

Detectives were then able to track Perry’s cellphone and determine it was in the area of the crime scene in Duquesne.

Artemus and Perry both face several charges including homicide and conspiracy.

Artemus was also arrested in April for allegedly shooting a 16-year-old girl in the leg.

Both Artemus and Perry are in the Allegheny County Jail.
