Since learning of the Shiffler's tragic death, family, classmates and community members are coming together to honor and remember him.
Friends of the standout swim team captain told Channel 11's Joe Holden that they're in shock.
A Hempfield Area Spartan's towel, swim cap and flowers are among items that have been left at the crash site in tribute to Shiffler.
Messages with the words "Pray for Jud" have poured in on social media.
Holden reported that Shiffler left swim practice Monday and was driving home when he crashed less than a mile from the high school.
Investigators said Shiffler's vehicle went through a stop sign at the intersection of Route 136 and Millersdale Road in Hempfield Township, and then crashed up the hillside.
Neighbors told Holden that the intersection is notoriously dangerous.
"This is the second time this year that we've had somebody hit this bank here," said Lisa Glessner.
Shiffler was flown to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, where he died late Tuesday morning.
Grief counselors will be available to students at Hempfield High School starting Wednesday morning.
