Power being restored after wind storms Saturday; Mercer outages still in the thousands

A few area schools have altered plans for Monday due to power outages.

Muse Elementary School in the Canon-McMillan School District will have a flexible instruction day.

The Allegheny-Clarion Valley and Keystone school districts are closed.

Power is being restored to area homes after a powerful storm Saturday.

As of 4:30 a.m. Monday, West Penn Power reports the following outages:

ALLEGHENY: 144

ARMSTRONG: 646

BEAVER: 427

BUTLER: 4,080

FAYETTE: 8

GREENE: 18

INDIANA: 64

LAWRENCE: 2,134.

Duquesne Light reports 49 total active outages on their website with 673 total customers affected.

Thousands are still without power after harsh wind storms ripped wires to the ground and broke countless poles in half on Saturday.

West Penn Power released a statement on Sunday and said they have restored power to 82,000 of their 100,000 customers who lost power on Saturday.

As of 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, the amount of West Penn outages in some local counties was:

ALLEGHENY: 578

ARMSTRONG: 1,128

BEAVER: 487

BUTLER: 7,109

CLARION: 4,417

FAYETTE: 8

GREENE: 88

INDIANA: 494

LAWRENCE: 3,431

“We understand that power outages are inconvenient – and especially the challenges faced by those of you who were impacted by storms two weekends in a row. This is an all-hands-on-deck effort and we’ll be working 24/7 until service is restored to every customer. Thank you for hanging in there with us during this challenging time,” said West Penn Power.

Duquesne Light Company also released a statement on Sunday. They believe all of their customers will have power restored by 10 p.m. on Tuesday. West Penn Power Company did not release an estimate on when repairs would be complete in their release.

As of 5 p.m. Sunday, Duquesne Light reported 3,090 customers without power.

Both companies are asking their customers to report their power outages if they have not already. West Penn Power can be reached online, over text, or by calling 1-888-544-4877. If you choose to text West Penn Power to report an outage you should say “TextOUT’ in your message and send it to 544487.

Duquesne Light customers can report their outage on their website, mobile app, or by calling 412-393-7000.

The storms knocked out power for around 40,000 Duquesne Light Customers on Saturday. The company said they had fixed more than 25,000 of those outages by 11 p.m.

Duquesne Light Company has not released an official estimate on when they expect to be done working but says 100 crews will be working overnight.

As of 11 p.m. on Saturday, Duquesne Light Company reported just under 15,000 customers were still without power.

West Penn Power reported thousands of powers throughout multiple different counties. Those outages were as follows:

ALLEGHENY: 2,413

ARMSTRONG: 3,781

BEAVER: 872

BUTLER: 11,969

CLARION: 4,744

FAYETTE: 527

GREENE: 733

INDIANA: 5,834

LAWRENCE: 7,750

Anyone without power should avoid opening their fridge unless they have to and should throw away dairy, meat and poultry if they do not have power for longer than four hours.

Anyone still waiting to have their power turned back on should make sure they have reported their outage. Duquesne Light customers can report their outage on their website, mobile app, or by calling 412-393-7000.

People are reminded to not approach downed power lines.

Anyone experiencing an emergency during a power outage should contact 911 for help.
