VANDERGRIFT, Pa. — Firefighters were called to put out a commercial fire Saturday afternoon in Vandergrift.
The fire broke out shortly after 4 p.m. at a business on Washington Avenue, causing significant damage.
"We had heavy smoke coming out the rear of the building around the eaves and an air conditioner on the roof. The windows in the front were blackened from the smoke," said Deputy Fire Chief Randy Dunmire.
Done Cole owns the building. The front of the building is his wife's party store, Occasions. His son's printing company, Legacy Printing and Publishing, is in the back of the building.
Cole's son alerted him to the fire.
"He called from Maryland, and someone had called him and told him that the building was on fire," said Cole. "When we got here it was smoking. I'll tell you, the fire companies, they must have really responded quick."
In all, about 100 firefighters from six departments battled the fire.
"Most of the fire damage is in the rear; in the printing area. There's extensive smoke and water damage in the retail sales area," said Dunmire.
A fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
