POINT MARION, Pa. — Pennsylvania State Police say a vehicle reported stolen in 2008 was just found in a river in Fayette County.
In a release, PSP says on Christmas Eve two fishermen near the Point Marion boat launch on the Monongahela River noticed the outline of a car in the water on their fishfinder.
“It’s absolutely incredible,” said Trooper Kalee Barnhart. “They were able to see the outline of the vehicle underneath in the water. I don’t know the depth of the water but it was extremely deep down in there that they were able to locate that vehicle.”
The white four-door sedan was recovered from the river Tuesday evening by the Murrysville Medic One Dive Team.
“The way we were able to match this vehicle to the stolen vehicle was the vehicle identification number on the vehicle once it was removed from the bottom of the river.”
State Police tell Channel 11 there is no missing person case or anything connected to the stolen car, and they don’t know who stole it in 2008, so the investigation is still very much underway.
“We’re going to track down who the owner is, contact family,” Barnhart said.
Troopers are thanking those two fishermen for alerting them when they saw the car on their fishfinder.
“If you see anything in the river, anything suspicious, please call it in and report it,” Barnhart added.
PSP says no signs of foul play were found, but the case remains under investigation.
